‘DENTAL HELP ARRIVES FOR THE ELDERLY’
The Healthy Cities Aged Taskforce recently organized the delivery of dental chairs
and treatment equipment to three Nursing Homes as part of a partnership to provide
improved oral health services to older people living in Aged accommodation.
The Healthy Cities Aged Taskforce, which aims to improve the health and well-being
of older people in the region, identified the problem of dental care as being one of the
highest priorities. The Taskforce consulted with aged accommodation providers who
said that the lack of basic equipment such as a dental chair and light for dental health
checks was a major problem as moving clients off site for dental checkups and
treatment was often a significant problem.
“With lengthy waiting list for dental treatment , the existence of chairs within the
nursing home setting will make it much easier for staff and visiting dental consultants
to provide basic checkups and prevention work” Taskforce Chairperson, Sarah Varley
said.
The taskforce obtained funding of $7000 through the Dapto Leagues Club, Collegians
Leagues Club and Wollongong Ex-Services Club which has enabled the purchase of
three chairs and lights. Aged accommodation providers tendered for the installation of
the chairs with the first chairs being delivered to Unanderra Care, Woonona
Retirement Village and Anglicare ‘Chesalon’ Nursing Home.
“We were overwhelmed by the interest shown by the three clubs who recognized the
value in providing a practical local strategy to improve oral health in our older citizens”
Ms Varley said.
The refurbished chairs and lights have been provided at a greatly reduced cost by
John Badger Dental Equipment.
Ms Varley added, “The Aged Taskforce has been really pleased at the great
partnership we created between local clubs, business and aged accommodation
providers. We need more of these to create inroads into addressing the health and
well-being of older people in the region”.
